So, I decided to make a little something for my cat the other day. Nothing fancy, just a ‘cat present box’ as I called it in my head. You know how cats are with boxes, right? It’s like magic to them. I had this perfectly good cardboard box sitting around after getting a delivery, and I thought, why waste it?

First thing, I just checked the box over. Made sure there wasn’t any weird tape sticking out or sharp staples. Didn’t want any accidents. It was a decent size, not too big, not too small. Just right for him to squeeze into, which I know cats seem to love. That whole cozy, tight fit thing.
I thought about getting creative, maybe cutting fancy windows or something. But honestly, I decided to keep it simple. Sometimes less is more, especially with cats. They make their own fun. I did decide to cut one extra hole in the side, though. Not too big, just big enough for him to peek out of or maybe bat a toy through. Used a simple box cutter, took like two seconds. Easy peasy.
Then came the big reveal. I just placed the box on the floor in the living room, near his favorite napping spot by the window. Didn’t push him towards it or anything. Just left it there to be discovered.
He ignored it for maybe an hour. Typical cat. Then, he did the slow walk-around. Sniffed every corner, inside and out. Gave the new hole a good long inspection. Then, almost anticlimactically, he just hopped in. Turned around a couple of times and plopped down. Instant fit.
It’s been a few days now, and that box is prime real estate. He naps in there, watches birds out the window from his ‘fort’, and sometimes just sits inside, looking out like he’s king of the castle. I guess it’s true what they say about boxes making cats feel secure. It’s like his little safe space. He can see anyone coming, but he feels hidden.
- He sleeps in it.
- He plays ambush from it.
- He just chills in it.
It’s kind of funny. We buy them expensive toys, fancy beds, and sometimes all they really want is a plain old cardboard box. Didn’t cost me a thing, just a few minutes of my time, and seeing him use it so much… well, it’s pretty satisfying. Definitely a successful project. Simple things, you know?
