Cat Nibbling on Blankets: Should I Be Worried About It?

Okay, so, you won’t believe what my cat did the other day. It’s something I’ve been meaning to figure out for a while now. It all started when I noticed my favorite blanket had these tiny little teeth marks all over it. At first, I thought maybe it was just wear and tear, but then I saw it – my cat, Mittens, was going to town on my blanket, nibbling away like it was the tastiest thing ever!

Cat Nibbling on Blankets: Should I Be Worried About It?

So, naturally, I had to find out why, right? I mean, cats do the weirdest things, but this one really got me curious. I started by just observing her. I noticed that she wasn’t just biting; she was also kneading the blanket with her paws, like she was trying to make it comfy or something. It was kind of cute, but also a little concerning because, well, it’s my favorite blanket!

I decided to do a little digging online. I typed “why does my cat nibble my blanket” into the search bar. And guess what? Turns out, it’s a pretty common thing! A lot of the results talked about how cats might do this because it reminds them of being a kitten and nursing from their mom. That kind of made sense, since Mittens was rescued when she was just a baby.

  • Cats tend to ingest their own fur as a natural part of their grooming routine.
  • A cat can start licking on a blanket and other beddings due to comfort, stress, anxiety, joy, missing mother, scent attraction, Pica Disorder, spilled foods, hunger.

But then I found some other articles that mentioned it could be a sign of stress or anxiety. That got me a little worried, so I started paying more attention to when she was doing it. Was it when I left the house? After a loud noise? I tried to see if there was any pattern.

After a few days of playing detective, I realized that she mostly did it when she was settling down for a nap, especially in the evenings. It seemed like more of a comfort thing than anything else. Still, to be on the safe side, I made sure she had plenty of toys and a cozy bed of her own to see if that would help. And you know what? It seemed to do the trick! She still nibbles the blanket sometimes, but not as much as before. Plus, I got her this super soft cat bed, and she absolutely loves it. She spends most of her nap time there now, kneading and purring away.

Sum up

So, in the end, it turned out that my cat’s blanket-nibbling habit was probably just a way for her to self-soothe and feel secure. It’s kind of like her own little security blanket, I guess. And even though I might need to get a new blanket for myself at some point, I’m just glad she’s happy and healthy. After all, that’s what really matters, right? Cats will be cats, and sometimes we just have to accept their quirky little habits. As long as they’re not hurting themselves or anything, it’s all good.
