Help! There Are Bugs in My Cats Litter Box: What Can I Do Now?

Okay, so, picture this: I went to scoop out my cat’s litter box the other day, and guess what I found? Bugs! Tiny little bugs, crawling around in there. I nearly freaked out, let me tell you. I love my cat, Mittens, but bugs in her bathroom? No, thank you!

Help! There Are Bugs in My Cats Litter Box: What Can I Do Now?

First, I needed to know what exactly I was dealing with. I grabbed my phone and started googling like crazy. There was a lot of gross stuff. Apparently, there’s a whole bunch of different creepy crawlies that can end up in a litter box, depending on where you live and what kind of litter you use. Not fun to read about, honestly. But it seems like fleas are pretty common, even though they usually hang out on your pet or in carpets, not so much in the litter itself.

What I Did About It

  • Deep Clean: I immediately emptied the entire litter box. Threw that old litter straight into a garbage bag, tied it up tight, and took it right outside to the trash bin. No way were those bugs staying in my house any longer than necessary.
  • Scrub-a-Dub: Then I gave that litter box a serious scrub down. I’m talking hot water, regular dish soap, the whole nine yards. I made sure to really get into all the corners and edges. I even let it soak for a bit just to be extra sure. I checked every corner to ensure that I cleaned all the bugs.
  • Mittens’ Spa Day: Since those bugs could have come from anywhere, including Mittens herself, I decided she needed a bath. Let’s just say she wasn’t thrilled about that part, but it had to be done. I used a special flea and tick shampoo, just in case.
  • Flea Comb Fun: After her bath, while she was still damp, I went over her with a flea comb. I dipped the comb in soapy water after each pass, just like the internet said. Luckily, I didn’t find anything on her, but better safe than sorry, right?
  • House Cleaning Party: This was the worst part, I had to vacuum every nook and cranny of my apartment, I paid special attention to the area around the litter box and any other places Mittens likes to hang out. I also washed all of her bedding in hot water. And I even sprayed some bug spray.

It was a whole ordeal, but I think I got rid of them. I’ve been keeping a close eye on the litter box, and so far, so good. No more bugs! I’m just hoping it stays that way. I’m going to be extra careful about cleaning the litter box regularly from now on, that’s for sure. Honestly, the whole thing was a bit of a nightmare, but at least it’s over now, and hopefully, it won’t happen again!
