Okay, so, I was thinking about names for my two new kittens the other day. It’s a tough one, right? You want something that fits their personalities but also something you won’t get tired of yelling across the house.

First, I tried to just observe them for a bit. See what kind of mischief they got into, what their little quirks were. One is super playful, always pouncing and chasing, and the other is more of a cuddler, always wanting to curl up in my lap. That did give me some inspiration, I must say, but I was really struggling.
Then, I started looking at things online. Someone mentioned how some people give their cats nicknames, and the cats learn to respond to both! I found some lists of famous duos, like “Artemis and Apollo” from Greek mythology, or “Bacon and Eggs” for a fun pair. Those were cute, but I wasn’t quite sold on them.
I went further down the rabbit hole, then I remembered all the cats I had growing up. We had a Jasper, a Spike, even a Cashmere! My mom was always good at this, she named one “BC” for Barn Cat, and later on he was called “Beast”. I did like the sound of “Spike” and that made me think of names that are a little bit rougher around the edges.
Here is where it got real interesting, I started to think about the sounds of names, not just what they meant. I wanted names that were easy to call out, that wouldn’t get mixed up with other words I use a lot. I figure short and sweet is best, and I don’t want them to sound too similar to each other, you know?
- I tried calling out some of the names to see how they felt. Some were okay, some felt a bit clunky.
- I also thought about how the names would sound when I’m scolding them, hah! Because let’s be real, they’re going to get into trouble.
After all that, I finally settled on names! I won’t tell you what they are yet, I want to keep that a little surprise for a later post. But I will say, I’m pretty happy with my choices. They feel right for the little furballs, and I think I’ll be able to live with them for a long time.
So yeah, that’s my story of naming my two cats. It was a journey, but a fun one! What about you guys? How did you name your pets?
